Meditation and self-realization are referred to by the masters as the basic science of God-realization. It becomes the backbone of learning communication with Cosmic Intelligence. Similarly, God is referred to by many names formally such as Christ Consciousness, Divine Spirit, Divine Consciousness, Bliss Consciousness, Holy Spirit, King of Kings, Creator Spirit, Supreme Being, Almighty Spirit, Eternal Spirit, Shiva, Allah, Yahweh, Jehovah, Lord, Adonai, Great Spirit, Wakan Tanka (from Lakota Sioux American Indian tribes), Gitchi Manitou (from Algonquin American Indian speaking tribes) and many other names.
What Is Self Realization
Paramahansa Yogananda writes: “Self-realization is the knowing – in body, mind, and soul – that we are one with the omnipresence o God; that we do not have to pray that it comes to us, that we are not merely near it at all time, but that God’s omnipresence is our omnipresence; that we are just as much a part of Him now as we ever will be. All we have to do is improve our knowing”.
The ultimate object of meditation is awareness of God and one’s soul. The soul’s eternal oneness with God is awareness. That conscious realization bestows God’s blessings of love, peace, joy, power, and wisdom.
There is an honorific title in the Sanskrit religious theology for an enlightened master. It literally means “supreme swan”. The person who fulfilled that title is Paramahamsa, one who is awakened in all realms, where union with ultimate reality has been attained.
Specifically, the Yoga master, Paramahansa Yogananda (from his Collected Talks and Essays) instructs: “Drink happiness from minds saturated with joy, and from the fountain of a daily meditation period, both morning and night. This is the best recipe for rejuvenation and for the maintenance of lasting youth.
As an illustration, he who finds joy within himself discovers that his body is charged with electric current, life energy, not from food but from God. As many attest, a genuine smile distributes the cosmic current, prana, to every body cell. “The happy man is less subject to disease, for happiness actually attracts into the body a greater supply of the universal life energy.”
Employing Concentration Needed In Meditation
Concentration in its highest form is employed in meditation. Therefore, the power of concentration eventually eliminates a monkey mind of scattered thoughts. Your mind gains more self-control; the voice of God’s silence begins to drown by our noisy thoughts. God (or Cosmic Consciousness and a host of other synonyms given as synonyms for God) has been with us all the time; it is we who have been wandering.
Accordingly, silencing our thoughts opens the door to Him. Tuning thoughts into God, into the realm of God’s Cosmic Consciousness, begins with a daily practice. God’s great saints, those divine incarnations sent to Earth to give us His messages, reveal doorways to enter His presence. As a result, those following such paths as meditation which leads to self-realization made significant progress.
As my Creator, and since God is ever-existing, eternal, ever-conscious, ever-bliss, we can communicate with our Creator. Why? Because we are His children. Meditation allows us that perception and entrance. It’s like a telescope that rises above our social programming or religious dogma.
Many masters have revealed that the point between the eyebrows is the focus of concentration. Jesus said: “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light”.
That “eye” is the spiritual eye. With eyes closed, spine erect, chin parallel to the floor, sitting on the floor or in a chair, concentrate your attention on the point between the eyebrows.
When the purpose of meditation is fulfilled, since you had focused on the spiritual eye, your consciousness will be in a higher state according to your inner spiritual capacity.
SRF Fellowship Meditation and Self-Realization Remote Course Learning
For deeper and faster progress, the organization SRF provides step-by-step access to the science of these advanced techniques. Doors open beyond the physical senses because of the daily practice of meditation.
Accordingly, the more one concentrates their efforts on maturing meditation, free from scattered thoughts, the closer one gets to the fruit of self-realization. Deeply meditating devotees even hear music emanating from the universe as Cosmic Sound; the cosmic intelligent vibration humming through space. When listening to that vibration, they often hear God telling them something thought-wise or through intuition.

Meditation and Self-realization
Seeking the safe shores of God’s righteousness with daily meditation practice is PROGRESS. God wants his children to play their roles as self-realized immortal problem solvers, not prodigal sons and daughters stirring up complications. Infinite peace and happiness are right behind the screen of ignorance. One just needs to lift the veil shrouding the knowingness of one’s soul’s perception.
Basically, meditation quiets the waves of thoughts and feelings so that the soul’s reflection on Spirit can be quietly perceived. Eventually, once perceived, it can be possessed.
There are certain meditation techniques that Paramahansa teaches that work toward attaining self-realization faster. Above all, the organization that Paramahansa Yogananda founded (yogananda.org) in the U.S. teaches those meditation techniques along with the mindset one needs to make progress.
Similarly, begin by reading his classic book, “Autobiography of a Yogi” to see if this might be a fit for you. Learn meditation and self-realization revelations in the Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda.
A Poem By Paramahamsa Yogananda
Yogananda asks us to pour our hearts out to Him (God), in the loving simplicity of a loving child. God is love, the substance that holds the universe together. He wrote this poem:
“Divine Beloved, make me transparent with purity, that Thou mayest shine through me. Make me luminous with wisdom, that I may behold Thee in me. Still the moving mirror of my mind, that I may behold Thy mooned face, undistorted by restlessness, ever reflected there.
Open all the windows of faith, that I may behold Thee in the mansion of peace. Fling open the doors of silence, that I may enter Thy temple of bliss. Awaken the memory of past incarnations, wherein I sought Thee and loved Thee.
Remember when I met Thee in the bower of the Milky Way, and worshiped Thee in the ever-changing living temple of nature? Beloved Divine, make me know at once and forever that Thou has always been mine, ever mine. My error dreams are past and buried beneath the sepulcher of oblivion, and I am awake basking in the sunlight of Thy awakening.
When I slept this sleep of earthy life, I dreamed this nature dream. I awoke, and now I dream of thee alone.”
In conclusion, about meditation and self-realization: Yogananda, like Jesus, is a self-realized master who, instead of having been surrounded by a 2,000+-year-old backward culture, was recently here and alive. He can relate God’s message in today’s vernacular.
As another Wester Yogi named Rajarsi Janakananda wrote: “We must meditate to attain deep faith. After we have received the first contact of God, we should then seek to develop the contact into a greater and greater consciousness. That is what Jesus asked everyone to do. He wanted them to receive his omnipresent consciousness. And that is what Paramahansaji teaches. He brings us God and all he asks is that we receive.”
